Useful information for visitors to Polaris World and the Murcia region

We've compiled this section to help you make the most of your visit to the Murcia region and the Polaris World resorts. We've included just a small selection of tried and tested suppliers of services based on our own experiences. There are of course many, many more and ultimately there's no substitute for exploring and finding out for yourself. We do hope though that you'll find this a useful place to start.

Flights to the region

Flights to Murcia

One of the great attractions of the Murcia region and the Polaris World resorts is that the flying time and plentiful choice of low cost flights really do make it a weekend destination for visitors from the UK & Ireland. From most regional airports in the UK there is now at least one flight daily into Alicante and Murcia airports and there'll be more to come when Murcia's new international airport opens at Corvera in 2009.

Leading airlines providing daily services year round include:

Airports

Alicante Airport

Alicante airport, situated just to the south of the city of Alicante is very well linked to all of the Polaris World resorts and around a 45 minute journey away via the motorways A7, AP7 and A30. The airport is currently being extended to provide additional terminal facilities for passengers as volumes increase. Already you will find very well stocked duty free shops, a small selection of boutiques and a choice of bars and snack restaurants after you have cleared security control.

Murcia Airport is located on the shores of the Mar Menor Sea close to the town of San Javier and approximately 30 minutes drive from the city of Murcia. It is the closest airport to the Polaris World 'Orillas del Mar Menor resorts' and is an easy 10 to 15 minute journey by road away. Facilities at the airport are limited although the departure lounge area is being improved. At the moment, catering is limited to one cafeteria located before security and a snack bar outside adjacent to the main car park. There is only a limited service refreshment counter on 'airside' and a small duty free shop.

Both Alicante and Murcia airports are managed by Aena

Hiring a Car

Polaris World Rent a Car

Car hire is very cheap in Spain and you will find a plentiful choice at both airports. It is best to book before you travel and pick up the keys from the rental office inside the arrivals terminal. Your vehicle will be waiting for you just outside the terminal. Companies we can recommend based on our own satisfactory experiences include Centauro and Auriga. You may find it cheaper to book via an internet broker e.g. Sky Cars and Car Jet.

Alternatively you may like to try the new Polaris World Rent a Car service. For residents of Polaris World resorts, your car can be delivered to your property on the resort and you will be collected from the airport -great if you fancy a beer or a glass of wine on the plane or if you want to avoid driving in the dark after an evening arrival. On your return you will have the option of leaving the car at your property and being driven to the airport by Polaris World or you can drive yourself if you prefer.

Where to stay

Intercontinental Hotel Mar Menor Golf Resort

If you are visiting the region before you own your own Polaris World property then you're going to need somewhere to rest your head.

Without doubt, the region's finest hotel is the first Polaris World hotel which opened in June 2006. The Intercontinental Mar Menor Golf Resort and Spa offers luxury accommodation in beautifully appointed rooms with fine dining options, an exquisite spa and excellent swimming and fitness facilities. Although very reasonably priced for the level of luxury afforded, the Intercontinental is amongst the most expensive in the region.

Less expensive alternatives include the NH Hotels in the region's major cities of Cartagena and Murcia. Both provide a very high standard of four-star accommodation in excellent locations. The NH Cartagena is perfectly situated overlooking the splendidly refurbished Marina and Port area and close to the historic attractions and shopping of the city centre.

Four-star accommodation on a lower budget is provided at the excellent Traina Hotel in San Pedro del Pinatar, just a 10 minute drive away from the main cluster of Polaris World resorts.

With the first Polaris World properties now completed and some of the resorts operational, you can now rent an apartment, villa or townhouse on a Polaris World resort and experience the lifestyle first hand. Polaris World Vacation Club is Polaris World's own property rental division or you can try independent web portals like My Villa Renters and Holiday Rentals

Where to eat

La Encina Buffet Restaurant at La Torre Golf Resort

The region offers a seemingly endless choice of gastronomic delights and it would be impossible to do it justice with just a few recommendations here. Based on our experience though, you can be sure of fine food, wine and first class service at the restaurants we mention.

If you are visiting the Polaris World Resorts for just a short break then you could do a lot worse than just experience the variety of fine cuisine available in the Polaris World restaurants themselves.

Restaurants at the Mar Menor Golf Resort

El Olivo: A retreat within the Social Club where you can savour the essence of the Mediterranean. El Olivo has the richness of the Murcia region to thank for the year-round availability of the highest quality products. These ingredients are masterfully employed in Mediterranean cuisine to provide healthy and exquisite dishes.

AQVA: AQVA is a welcoming Mediterranean style restaurant offering exquisite seasonal dishes following thousand-year old traditions and with a subtle modern and innovative touch including an exclusive mineral water menu.

Nomad: Discover the cuisine of different areas of the Mediterranean in Nomad, a restaurant offering international cuisine in the Intercontinental Hotel. Accompany your meal with one of the excellent wines from the wine cellar and don't forget to try the full Brunch, sampling the very best of Murcian food.

Al Fresco: The lifestyle and the authentic flavours of the Mediterranean are brought together in Al Fresco on the Hotel pool terrace. These unique surroundings are ideal for dinner or a light lunch in the open air.

Restaurants at La Torre Golf Resort

La Encina: A buffet first course and a choice of a wide variety of meats, fish or pasta dishes for the second course. Then back to the buffet for an exquisite range of desserts.

If you are venturing out a little further, try the Tapelia restaurants in Murcia and Cartagena, for a delightful Paella, the Azafran in Cartagena for Mediterranean cuisine and for the best in traditional Spanish cooking, try La Encarnacion in Los Alcazares and Retiro in Torre Pachecco.
